Mountain Trekking
Mt. Ruwenzori
Virunga National Park also offers spectacular trekking and climbing trips to the Rwenzori mountains in the north of the park. Known also as the “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzoris reach a height of 5,109 m (16,761 ft) and contain the largest glaciers left on the African continent. Those who trek and climb in the Rwenzoris will experience a stunning variety of landscapes, including bamboo and giant fern forests, alpine meadows and lakes, and snow-capped peaks. The flora and fauna of the Rwenzoris is equally diverse. Forest elephant, Okapi, chimpanzees, and numerous bird species make the Rwenzoris their home. The best weather in the Rwenzoris usually happens from January through mid-March and June to late August. There are four huts in the Rwenzoris: Kalonge (2138 m/7014 ft.), Mahangu (3310 m/10,859 ft.), Kiondo (4200 m/13,779 ft.), and Moraine (4350 m/14,271 ft.).
9 Day Rwenzori Mountains Hike (Climbing)
Day 1: Kampala to Kasese
Drive from Kampala to Kasese Town. Shop all food needed up in the mountain. Register with RMS offices. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Magherita or Rwenzori Base Mountain Camp.
Day 2: Climb Nyabitaba
After breakfast, drive to Ibanda, the park headquarters and the Rwenzori Mountaineering services (RMS) at Nyakalenjiga (5400ft/1646m) arrange payments, rent equipment and select guides and porters. Start hiking from this point up to Nyabitaba Hut (8700ft/2652m) and overnight. Hiking may take 5-7 hours.
Day 3:Nyabita Hut
Follow the trail from Nyabitaba hut leading to Kurt Shaffer Bridge crossing Bujuku and Mubuku rivers. From this point it is steep and slippery. Continue the hike up to John Matte hut (11200ft/3415m) and overnight. Day’s hiking may take 7 hours. Slow hikers can consider going back from this point.
Day 4: John Matte Camp
From John Matte you will cross River Bujuku and enter the Bigo bog. cross the drier ground up to Lake Bujuku overlooking Mt. Baker and speke to the north. Follow the trail up to Bujuku Hut (13000 ft 3962m)the Hike may take 3-5 hours.
Day 5: Bukuju Hut
From Bujuku Hut, hike to Scott Elliot leading to Elena Hut (14,700 ft / 44300m). This the end point for the central circuit. At the same time it is the starting point to climb Margherita peak (16763 ft /5109m) or Mt Stanley. (You will need 2 extra days to climb to the peaks) Follow the central circuit through the alpine zone of sparse low vegetation to crater lakes and drop to Lake Kitandara hut and overnight.
Day 6: Kitandara Hut
Descend from Lake Kitandara hut leaving Megharita peak northwards and Democrat Republic of Congo westwards and on clear days you will see big area of Congo and the famous tropical forests of Congo. Descend up to Guy Yeoman Hut (10700ft/3261m).
Day 7: Guy Yeoman Hut
Descend to Nyabitaba Hut. The journey is long and may be difficult of deep mud and river crossing. This may take you 5 hours. Should you decide to descend up to Nyakalegila it may take you anther 2-p3 hours.
Day 8: Nyabitaba Hut
From Nyabitaba Hut, descend to Nyakalengija the park headquarters. You will meet your driver to drive you back to Kasese town to your hotel for warm showers and relax. Dinner and overnight.
Day 9: Hotel
After breakfast drive to Kampala or Entebbe in case your flight connections.
End of hiking
10 day Ruwenzori climbing
Day 1: Arrival
You will be welcomed by a representative of Great Lakes Safaris at Entebbe Airport. From here you will be transferred to Kampala and continue to Mbarara Town, before heading for the foothills of the Mountains of Moon. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Margherita.
Day 2: Start Of The Equator Glaciers Tour
Early in the morning transfer to Nyakalengija (1646 meters) where you will start your climb into the mountains. The hike takes you along the Mubuku River and through thick equatorial vegetation before arriving at the Nyabitaba hut (2650 meters). You might hear chimpanzees or see blue monkeys. Dinner and overnight in Nyabitaba hut.
Total hiking time: 5-7 hours
Ascent: 1200 meters
Day 3: John Matte Hut
After early breakfast you will start the hike through the Kurt Sharfer Bridge to marvel at the sparkling Mubuku river confluence. In the afternoon you will reach the Nyamuleju hut from where you might enjoy a nice view at Mount Stanley and Speke. Climb through the open patches, lobelia, and heath moss forest when proceeding up to the John Matte hut (3415 meters) for overnight.
Total hiking time: 7 hours
Ascent: 915 meters
Day 4: Bujuku Hut
Depart early through the giant Lobelias and heath trees. You ascend to the Bigo Bog and scenic landscape of lobelias and giant groundsels. You will pass Lake Bujuku, majestically settled between the famous mountains. Continue to a rock shelter called Cooking Pot and soon you will arrive at your final stop for today. Dinner and overnight at the Bujuku Hut (3960 meters).
Total hiking time: 3-5 hours
Ascent: 560 meters
Day 5: Elena Hut
Head off from the valley with scenic alpine vegetation consisting Giant Groundsels and Lobelia and continue to ascend Mount Victoria and Mount Speke at 4890 meters. Depart through the lovely views of the Savoia and Elena glaciers, scale further through to the Scott Elliott pass and proceed through the snow to the Elena Hut (4560 meters) for overnight rest. The Elena Hut will be your base for the final conquers of the Rwenzori Mountains.
Total hiking time: 3-5 hours
Ascent: 470 meters
Day 6: Final Ascent To The Alps Of Africa!
Early morning ascent to the snowy Alexander peak (5092 meters) and then onwards to the highest peak at 5109 meters, the famous Margherita! Thereafter we directly descend to the beautiful lake Kitandara for overnight stay at Kitandara hut (4020 meters).
Total hiking time: 3-5 hours
Ascent: 670 meters – Descent: 1090 meters
Day 7: Guy Yeoman Hut
After early breakfast a long descent begins. First we climb from Lake Kitandara to the Fresh field Pass from where you can look into the neighbouring country Congo. We will have a picnic lunch on the way and continue our journey while descending to the Guy Yeoman hut (3260 meters) for dinner and overnight.
Total hiking time: 5-7 hours
Descent: 1000 meters
Day 8: Nyabitaba Hut
The last part of the hike! Drop very steeply along the Mubuku river and join the original route near the Bujuku river. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba Hut (2650 meters).
Total hiking time: 5-7 hours
Descent: 600 meters
Day 9: Kasese
Today we descend to Nyakalengija which will take approximately 2-3 hours. Then we proceed to Kasese to check in at Hotel Margherita. Here you can relax and reflect your climb of the highest peak in Uganda. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Margherita.
Day 10: Departure
A last chance to enjoy the enchanting peaks of the Mountains of the Moon. With unforgettable memories you will say goodbye and leave for Kampala. Then proceed to Entebbe Airport for your evening flight. Or you might choose to enjoy the beauty of Uganda a little longer and visit other beautiful national parks
