8 day Ethiopia Omo Valley route
Day 1. Addis Ababa
After arriving in Addis Ababa, you will be given a short tour of the capital, visiting the Ethnographic museums and St George’s Church. Then, we will drive to the Rift Valley lake of Langano where you can trek or walk in the beautiful surroundings, so some bird-watching, explore the area on horseback or have a relaxing swim in the only bilharzias-free lake.
Dinner and Overnight at Wenney eco-lodge secluded in a natural paradise at shore of lake Langano and Munessa forest.
Day 2. Wolayta and Dorze tribe
After an early start, we will drive through spectacular surroundings to Arbaminch. On the way, we’ll visit the Wolayta people’s villages and get a taste of their culture. We will then go on to Chencha to visit the Dorze people, with their unique houses and traditions. You’ll visit the false banana cultivations, from which they extract their traditional bread (the Kotcho), the weaving works and more. We will arrive at Arbaminch late in the afternoon. Dinner and Overnight at Swaynes Hotel with spectacular views over Chamo and Abaya lakes.
Day 3. Konso, Derase, Tsemay, Ari and Benna tribes
We will leave early and drive to Jinka. On the way we will see the Konso, Derase, Tsemay, Ari and Benna people. We will make a stop to visit of a village of the Konso people, who are famous for terraced farming and have unique traditions. Dinner and Overnight at Tebekew Resort
Day 4. Mursi tribe
We will drive to the Mago National Park, admiring different animals and birds as you travel. Then, we will proceed to visit the Mursi people and their villages. Here, women used to put round plates into their lips because it was considered to be beautiful. Then, we will drive to Jinka and visit the cultural museum during the afternoon. Overstay at Jinka
Day 5. Tsemay, Erbore and Hamer tribe
We’ll drive to the village of Key Afer to see the lively, colourful market of the Tsemay and Erbore people. Then we will go on to Turmi, to visit the Hamer people and their villages, having lunch on the way. Dinner and Overnight at Turmi Evangadi lodge.
Day 6. Karo Tribe
We will drive to visit the Karo people, famed for their intricate body decoration. From Kortcho village you’ll enjoy a spectacular view over the Omo River. We’ll then head back to Turmi, and with luck we will find a marriage ceremony of the Hammer people, which includes a bucking bull and Evangadi dances. Otherwise we’ll take time to visit a traditional village and soak up the culture. Dinner and overnight at Turmi Evangadi lodge.
Day 7. Dimeka Village
We’ll drive to the village of Dimeka to see the lively Saturday market of the Hamer, Karo & Tsemay people. Then we’ll proceed to the Weyto river valley, passing the Derase and Konso people on our way to Arbaminch. If time allows, you can take a boat on Lake Chamo to admire the longest crocodiles in Africa (reaching about 6 metres long), and see Hippos and many birds. Dinner and Overnight at Swaynes Hotel
Day 8.Wolayta and Guraghe tribe – Addis Ababa
Drive back to Addis, visiting the Wolayta and Guraghe people on the way, stopping in some of the villages and admiring the pleasant views. In the evening, you will have dinner in a traditional restaurant and watch traditional folk dances. After, we will take you to the airport for your departure (or, if your flight is on the next day, you will stay overnight in Addis Ababa).
